Ari Jokimäki (born 1967) is a Finnish independent researcher and science writer based in Espoo, Finland. He is known for his observationally oriented work in astronomy, in particular a catalogue of M51 type galaxy associations, and for his long-running climate science bibliography project AGW Observer.
Biography
Jokimäki was born in 1967 and lives in Espoo, Finland. He holds a bachelor's degree in engineering (computer engineering) and describes himself not as a professional scientist but as an interested layman who works from the primary research literature. His interests include astronomy, observing and documenting nature, music and sports.
Work
Astronomy
In 2008 Jokimäki published, with M. Orr and D. Russell, "A catalogue of M51 type galaxy associations" in Astrophysics and Space Science (vol. 315, pp. 249–283). The catalogue presents 232 apparently interacting galaxy pairs of the M51 class, identified by visual inspection of multi-band images in the IRSA archive. Among its findings were that unusually few of the main galaxies in M51 systems are early-type or barred spirals, that over 70% of the main galaxies are two-armed spirals, that several systems previously classified as M51 types are not M51 systems under the catalogue's definition (some "companions" being HII regions in the main galaxy or foreground stars in the Milky Way), and that only about 18% of the M51 type companions have published redshift measurements.
Climate science bibliography
Jokimäki maintains AGW Observer, a blog and reference site devoted to collecting and indexing peer-reviewed papers on anthropogenic global warming, with an emphasis on the observational side of the subject rather than on modelling. The site publishes topical paper lists and regular round-ups of newly published research. He has also written for the Finnish climate site Ilmastotieto and has contributed to the Skeptical Science website, including its weekly new-research listings. He is a co-author of peer-reviewed papers on climate topics, including "On a minimal model for estimating climate sensitivity" (Ecological Modelling, 2015) and "A fluctuation in surface temperature in historical context" (Environmental Research Letters, 2018).
