Dean Radin (born February 29, 1952) is an American parapsychology researcher and author. He is Chief Scientist at the Institute of Noetic Sciences (IONS) in Petaluma, California, and has written extensively on psi phenomena and the study of consciousness. He is the author of over 200 articles and several books, including The Conscious Universe (1997), Entangled Minds (2006), Supernormal (2013), and Real Magic (2018). Radin's work is situated within parapsychology, a field generally regarded as outside mainstream science.
Biography
Education
Radin earned a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. He went on to complete a master's degree in electrical engineering and a PhD in educational psychology, both at the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign.
Career
Early in his career Radin worked as a researcher at Bell Labs and at GTE Laboratories. He subsequently conducted research on exceptional human capacities at Princeton University, where he was associated with the Princeton Engineering Anomalies Research (PEAR) program, as well as at the University of Edinburgh, SRI International, and Interval Research Corporation. He also held a faculty position at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
Radin later joined the Institute of Noetic Sciences, where he serves as Chief Scientist. He has served four terms as president of the Parapsychological Association, the international professional organization of researchers in the field, having been elected in 1988, 1993, 1998, and 2005. He is also co-editor-in-chief of Explore: The Journal of Science and Healing.
Work
Radin's research focuses on parapsychology, the scientific study of purported psychic (psi) phenomena. His experimental work has addressed topics such as telepathy, precognition, and presentiment (an anticipatory physiological response to future stimuli), as well as claimed mind–matter interactions involving random number generators. He has written on possible connections between quantum theory and consciousness, and has argued that meta-analyses of psi experiments show small but statistically significant effects.
Parapsychology is widely regarded within the scientific community as outside mainstream science, and is often described as a protoscience or fringe science. Radin's interpretations and experimental methods have been the subject of substantial criticism from skeptics, who argue that the reported effects have not been convincingly replicated under mainstream conditions. Radin, for his part, maintains that the accumulated evidence warrants continued serious investigation.
