Zifeng Li (Chinese: 李子丰; born 1 July 1962) is a Chinese professor of petroleum engineering at Yanshan University, and the author of two quite separate bodies of work.

In his profession he is a mainstream and decorated researcher in the mechanics of rod and pipe strings in oil and gas wells: more than 140 papers, six books, a technical editorship at SPE Drilling & Completion for which the Society of Petroleum Engineers named him an Outstanding Technical Editor, and national research awards. His central technical result is a set of fundamental equations for the dynamic analysis of rod and pipe strings which unify differential equations that had previously been developed separately for each application.

Outside it he is one of China's most publicly visible critics of special relativity, arguing that Einstein misread the experimental evidence on the speed of light, that mass and energy cannot transform into one another, and that relativity should be replaced by what he calls the Moving Objects Observation Theory. He grounds this in a philosophical position — that physics rests on philosophy, and that physics should be guided by materialism and cleared of what he regards as idealism. He has also argued that the Apollo Moon landings were staged.

Biography

Li was born in July 1962 in Qian'an, Hebei Province. He is a member of the Communist Party of China and of the China Democratic League.

He graduated in drilling engineering from Northeast Petroleum University (then Daqing Petroleum Institute) in 1983 and took a master's degree there in petroleum machinery engineering in 1986. He completed a doctorate in oil and gas field development engineering at the China University of Petroleum, Beijing, in 1992, and was a postdoctoral researcher in mechanics at the Harbin Institute of Technology from 1992 to 1994. He also holds a B.S.E.E. by his own account.

Petroleum engineering

Rod and pipe string mechanics

Since 1985 Li has worked on the mechanics of the long steel strings that make a well function — drill strings, casing, tubing and sucker rods — under successive national research programmes including the Eighth and Ninth Five-Year Plan key scientific projects and the 863 Program for advanced technology development.

His principal claim is unification. Before his work, the dynamic analysis of these strings used different differential equations for each application: tension and torque in directional wells, drill-string vibration, bottom-hole assembly analysis, buckling of pipe and casing, and sucker-rod pumping systems were each treated with their own formulation. Li proposed a set of fundamental equations for dynamic analysis of rod and pipe strings from which, he argues, each of these is recovered by appropriate simplification — a single framework in place of a collection of special cases.

Specific models he has developed include:

  • a steady tension–torque model for rod and pipe strings in directional wells;
  • mathematical models for diagnosis and prediction of sucker-rod pumping system behaviour in directional wells;
  • three-dimensional models for static BHA analysis under both small and large deflections;
  • models for drill-string longitudinal, torsional and coupled vibration;
  • elastic and plastic analysis of casing and tubing during steam injection;
  • static buckling analysis of rod and pipe strings;
  • analysis of the expansion and contraction of slotted tubulars.

These were compiled into packaged industrial application software used in petroleum production. The work formed part of the "Petroleum and Horizontal Well Drilling Packaged Technology" project of the Eighth Five-Year Plan, and of the "Sidetracking Horizontal Well Exploitation Packaged Technology" and "Undersea Extended Reach Well Path Control Technology" projects under the Ninth Five-Year Plan and the 863 Program.

Disputes within the field

Li's technical work has itself been contentious, which is worth recording because it bears on how his physics should be read. In "Research advances and debates on tubular mechanics in oil and gas wells" (Acta Petrolei Sinica, 2016, 37(4), 531–556) he surveyed the field's open disagreements and took positions in several: that using the fictitious force to judge pipe-string stability is incorrect; that the "unbending drill-collar" concept lacks theoretical basis; that recent drill-string bifurcation and chaos research contains methodological problems; and he has taken part in extended exchanges over casing strength design standards.

These are ordinary refereed disagreements, conducted from a position of recognized authority. Li is not someone who disputes consensus only where he is an amateur.

Physics and philosophy

Materialist starting point

Li's physics proceeds from a stated philosophical commitment: that physics comes from philosophy, that philosophy is the base of physics and physics its quantitative development, and that physical research should therefore be conducted on an explicitly materialist footing. He opposes what he calls idealism and creationism in physics, and treats a good deal of twentieth-century theory as having smuggled the former in.

From this he argues in "Materialistic Views of Space-Time and Mass-Energy" (2007) that time lapses unidirectionally and symmetrically and that three-dimensional space is uniform in all directions; that mass is the essence of matter and energy the nature of the material world; and — the sharpest consequence — that mass and energy cannot transform into one another, which sets him against the usual reading of E = mc².

Criticism of special relativity

Li's objection to special relativity turns on a specific claim about what the experiments show. All experiments, he argues, establish that the speed of light measured relative to its source is constant in vacuum. Einstein instead read them as establishing that light moves at a fixed velocity c in the "stationary" system whether emitted by a stationary or a moving body — an interpretation Li regards as a misunderstanding of the experimental result, and the error from which special relativity follows.

He argues further that there are mistakes in the derivation of the Lorentz transformation and in Einstein's 1905 paper, and concludes that the relative speed between two objects can exceed c.

Moving Objects Observation Theory

His proposed replacement introduces a distinction between visual space-time — what an observer measures of a moving object — and realistic space-time, the object's actual state. Deriving the relations among the realistic space-time of a moving frame, the visual space-time, and the realistic space-time of a static frame, he concludes that the apparent effects of relativity are artifacts of observation: motion causes no change in length, in time or in mass, and there is no light barrier.

A point in his favour on method: having published the theory in 2007, Li appended a correction to the paper's wiki entry noting that several equations in it are wrong, and directing readers to the corrected treatment in "Observation Theory of Moving Objects" (2011). Publishing an erratum against one's own headline result is not universal in this literature.

Other positions

Apollo Moon landings

In "The Apollo Moon Landings Is A Put-up Job" (2008) Li argues that the Apollo landings were staged, undertaken to frighten the Soviet Union during the Cold War contest for hegemony, and that they deceived both the Soviet government and the world's public.

This is a conspiracy claim rather than a physics argument, and it should be labelled as such. The Apollo landings are among the most extensively documented events in technological history — independently corroborated by returned lunar samples distributed to laboratories worldwide, by retroreflectors left on the surface and still ranged by observatories in several countries, and by Soviet tracking of the missions at the time by a state with every motive to expose a fraud.

Public activity

Li has been an unusually public relativity critic in China. He organized a 2007 seminar on the space-time view of special relativity, whose resolution is catalogued here, and his anti-relativity activity has been reported in the Chinese press, including Science and Technology Daily; the wiki holds a collection of "Newspaper and Journal Reports on Zifeng Li Anti-relativity Activities" (2008). Several of his physics papers have appeared in Physics Essays, Scientific Inquiry and Chinese-language journals in both simplified and traditional characters.
