Albrecht Giese is a German independent researcher based in Hamburg who has developed, since about 2000, what he calls the Basic Particle Model — an attempt to derive the results of special and general relativity from the internal mechanics of composite particles rather than from the geometry of spacetime.

The claim is that time dilation, length contraction, inertial mass and gravitation are all consequences of one structural fact: that every elementary particle is a bound pair of massless constituents circling one another at the speed of light. If that is so, then relativity is a statement about how objects are built, not about what space and time are — and, in Giese's view, the choice of a curved spacetime was, in his words, "one of the greatest and most consequential aberrations in the history of science."

He first presented the model at the spring conference of the German Physical Society in Dresden in March 2000, and has returned to it at DPG meetings, at PIRT, at a Vigier symposium and elsewhere ever since.

The Basic Particle Model

The construction

On Giese's account an elementary particle is not elementary. Each consists of two massless "basic particles" held at a fixed separation by a binding interaction he associates with the strong force, orbiting one another at c. The orbital frequency is identified with the de Broglie frequency of the particle. He traces the lineage of the idea to de Broglie's internal oscillation of 1923, to Dirac's Zitterbewegung of 1928, and to Schrödinger's work of 1930 on the extension of the electron.

Everything else in the model follows from that picture.

Time dilation

Because the constituents must always move at c, a particle travelling at speed v has only the Pythagorean remainder q = √(c² − v²) available for its internal orbit. The orbital period therefore stretches by exactly the Lorentz factor. Time dilation becomes a mechanical consequence of the internal motion, not a property of time.

Length contraction

Contraction Giese derives from the behaviour of the binding interaction in motion: the path length between the constituents changes and the exchange stream is aberrated, so the binding field is attenuated and the equilibrium separation shortens. The treatment is explicitly Lorentzian — he takes it to be "compatible with the assumption of an ether as a general reference of motion" — and this is the point at which his account departs most sharply from Einstein's, since it makes contraction a real dynamical effect in a preferred frame rather than a reciprocal, kinematic one.

Inertia and the origin of mass

Inertia, on this model, is a delay effect. When one constituent is displaced, its partner cannot respond until a signal has crossed the separation r0, a time r0/c; the temporary imbalance is what resists acceleration. Giese derives a universal relation in which mass varies inversely with the internal radius, and claims that inserting the radius obtained from the particle's magnetic moment yields the correct mass with no free parameters — and so with no need of a Higgs field. Relativistic mass increase and the mass–energy relation follow from the same construction.

Gravity as refraction

Giese rejects curved spacetime in favour of a variable speed of light. In a gravitational potential c is reduced — radially and tangentially by different powers, following the Shapiro delay measurements — and the internal light-speed orbit of a particle is therefore refracted. That refraction, he argues, produces gravitational acceleration, and gravity needs no geometry.

He carries the claim further than most Lorentzian accounts do. He holds that "the mass of an object is not the cause of its gravitational field", and assigns photons the role usually given to dark matter — with the consequence, on his account, that dark energy and the search for quantum gravity both dissolve. He also argues that Sagnac-type rotating configurations are incompatible with a constant c in every frame, and so tell against Einstein's formulation directly; the Sagnac Effect is a recurring point of contention in this literature.

What he claims for it

The advertised advantages are Euclidean rather than Riemannian geometry, the disappearance of the standard paradoxes, an account of the structure of leptons and quarks without quantum mechanics, and a theory simple enough to teach in schools.

Publications and presentations

Giese's fullest peer-reviewed-adjacent publication is "Ongoing problems with special and general relativity, and solutions" (Journal of Physics: Conference Series 1251, 2019), from the proceedings of the 11th Vigier Symposium at Liège in 2018. He gave "Taking Relativity back from Principles to Physical Processes" at PIRT in London in 2008, spoke at an EPR workshop in Puebla in the same year, and addressed the Alternative Natural Philosophy Association in 2022 on dark matter.

He has presented at German Physical Society spring conferences repeatedly, in the association's philosophy-of-physics and alternative-gravitation sessions: Dresden 2000, Munich 2009 ("Gravity / General Relativity without Einstein" and "The Origin of Mass"), Bonn 2010, Dresden 2011 ("Physiktheorien als Dogma — am Beispiel der Relativitätstheorie"), Berlin 2014 ("Relativity without Space-Time") and Heidelberg 2022 ("Lorentzianische Relativität erklärt Dunkle Materie"). These are member-submitted abstracts rather than refereed contributions, but they are on the record of the national physics society, which is not nothing.

A series of papers is available from his own site: Relativity without Einstein, The Structure of Matter: The Basic Particle Model, The Origin of Relativity, Why is Time Slowed Down in Motion?, Relativistic Contraction without Einstein!, The Origin of Gravity, The Origin of Mass and The Seeming Mystery of the Electron. He has published no book.

The item catalogued on this wiki, "Relativity Based on Revised Particle" (2010), is a citation-only record with no abstract; the title appears to be a truncation of a longer one, and the paper is otherwise unlocated.

Reception

Engagement with the model has been minimal. His one indexed paper has attracted a handful of citations, all from within the same alternative-physics circle, and there is no critique, replication attempt or citation from the established relativity or particle-physics literature. His own reference list draws chiefly on Prokhovnik, Selleri and de Broglie — the Lorentzian-relativity tradition to which the model belongs.

This is worth stating plainly rather than glossing. The Basic Particle Model is a serious and internally worked-out attempt at a mechanical foundation for relativistic effects, but it has not been tested against opposition, and no one outside a small readership has engaged with its derivations.

A note on "Jan Giese"

This wiki separately catalogues two German papers of 1962 on interferometer experiments — Über die Möglichkeit positiver Ergebnisse beim Michelsonversuche and Positive Ergebnisse mit einem Interferometer mit Winkelverschiebungen — under the name Jan Giese. No relationship between the two authors has been established, and none is claimed in Albrecht Giese's own writings; the surname match appears to be coincidental. The records should be kept separate.

Readers should also note that the Albrecht Giese with a Wikipedia article was a mayor of Danzig who died in 1580, and is unrelated.
