Emission Theory
Emission theory, also called the ballistic theory of light, holds that light travels at speed c relative to its source rather than relative to a medium or to all inertial frames alike. Its best-known form is the theory Walther Ritz published in 1908.
The standard account
Emission theory was a serious competitor to both the Aether theories and to Special Relativity in the first decade of the twentieth century. It has an immediate appeal: it explains the null result of the Michelson-Morley Experiment without length contraction or time dilation, because light emitted by a source moving with the apparatus simply keeps the apparatus's velocity. Walter Ritz worked out an electrodynamics on this basis; his exchange with Einstein, published jointly in 1909, is documented here as The Ritz-Einstein Agreement to Disagree.
The theory is now regarded as refuted, on several independent grounds:
- Binary stars. De Sitter argued in 1913 that if light from the approaching and receding components of a spectroscopic binary travelled at different speeds, the orbits would appear grossly distorted or even multiply imaged; the observed orbits are Keplerian.
- Alväger's 1964 measurement. At CERN, Alväger and colleagues measured the speed of gamma rays from the decay of neutral pions moving at about 0.99975c and found it equal to c, with the source-velocity coefficient consistent with zero at the level of a few parts in 104. This is the cleanest test, because the photons are produced in vacuum by a source of known, extreme velocity.
- X-ray binaries. Brecher's 1977 analysis of pulse arrival times from binary X-ray sources tightened the bound on any source-velocity dependence by several further orders of magnitude.
The one genuine complication concerns the de Sitter argument specifically. John G Fox pointed out in the 1960s that light from a star traverses interstellar gas, and that by the Ewald–Oseen extinction theorem the light is repeatedly re-emitted by the medium, which would erase any original source-velocity dependence before it reached us. Fox's point is a criticism of the evidential force of de Sitter's observation, not an endorsement of emission theory; the extinction objection does not apply to Alväger's vacuum measurement, which is why that experiment is the decisive one.
