Field Structure Theory (FST) is a structural interpretation of physics developed by the American sculptor, industrial designer and independent theorist Charles Donald "Don" Briddell (b. 1944). It proposes that the natural world is a product of fieldstructure geometry: that particles, waves, mass, energy and charge are not primitive entities but configurations of loops, twists and knots in an underlying medium, and that their properties — including their mass values — follow from how those loops are counted, twisted and oriented.

FST is a deterministic and background-dependent theory, offered as an alternative to the Standard Model and quantum mechanics. Its geometry is formalized in a companion system Briddell calls Structural Skew Topology (SST). The theory has been developed privately since the 1960s and presented publicly since 2004, chiefly at conferences of the Natural Philosophy Alliance and the Alternative Natural Philosophy Alliance, and in the book The Particle Hierarchy Paradigm: According to Field Structure Theory (2021). It lies outside mainstream physics.

Origins

FST grew not out of physics but out of design — a fact that shapes its whole character. As an industrial design student at Pratt Institute in the mid-1960s, Briddell studied form and structure theory under Prof. William Katavolos and made an independent study of Buckminster Fuller and Kenneth Snelson; his 1966 senior thesis was titled "Form and Structure Theory."

Two discoveries followed. The first was a way of giving three-dimensional forms (polyhedra) structural integrity through pure torsion, using elements he calls Structors. The second was a related topological family of three-dimensional knotted forms he calls fieldstructures — earlier described as "torsion structures". Applying this geometry to physics produced FST.

Briddell dates a key result precisely: on 31 December 1999 he found that three-dimensional loop fractal automata structured according to a Sierpinski triangle hierarchy generate the known mass values of particles to within a fraction of one percent.

Principles

Action and the loop

FST begins with action, which Briddell defines as "loops of relatedness" — the simplest notion we have about anything. Action manifests physically as energy when it acquires a wave form, and the business of fieldstructures is to show how action converts into energy and energy into mass.

Its foundational structural claim is that the closed loop is the only viable building element. Briddell argues it is the only form that can evolve structural complexity without introducing contrived devices such as fasteners. He reports having studied the open line of action — a string with two ends — and found it "incapable of structural potential", which places FST in direct opposition to the premise of string theory.

Everything else follows from varying three quantities only:

  • the number of action loops involved,
  • the number of twists in each loop, and
  • their chiral orientation to one another.

The plenum

Beneath physical reality FST posits a plenum: a matrix of chiral loops of action. Loops in perfect quiescence have no apparent energy; energy becomes an attribute of a loop only through interaction, appearing as twisting and bending when loops interact in three dimensions.

The build sequence runs: interacting plenum loops produce radiant boson energy waves; from these evolve fermion structures, which occupy a local space of limited extent and possess a rest state. A structure of limited spatial extension is what we call a mass particle. The hierarchy then continues upward through atoms, molecules and beyond, each level a further iteration of the same loop mechanics.

Briddell's image for the relation between matter and field is a knot and a string: "the material world is not separate from the action matrix." The field in FST is not a contrived background invented to track the trajectories of moving objects, but a full participant in the affairs of matter and energy.

He observes that the electron and proton are the only particles whose mass has a stable rest state, and that they are therefore responsible for the longevity of the universe — remarking that "contrary to the decrees of the patent office, these two structures are perpetual motion machines par excellence."

Structural Skew Topology

Structural Skew Topology (SST) is the geometry of loop dynamics underlying FST, governed by a set of axioms intended to restrict allowable forms to those Briddell considers found in nature. FST is the application of SST to physics; SST supplies the permitted structures, FST interprets them physically.

Results claimed

The Particle Hierarchy Chart

Briddell's Particle Hierarchy Chart (PHC #3). Loop counts ascend in powers of three — 3, 9, 27, 81, 243, 729, 2187 — and are mapped to named particles, with field order, boson/fermion character and spin.

The theory's central claim is that particle mass values can be derived rather than measured — generated by counting loops and twists arranged in the Sierpinski fractal hierarchy. Briddell sets this out in a Particle Hierarchy Chart.

An important wrinkle in his account, given in his 2008 American Mathematical Society sectional abstract, is that mass values inside the hierarchy differ from those outside it. Particles within the hierarchy share energy and have greater mass; when hierarchy decay occurs, hierarchy loop numbers are subtracted to obtain the mass of the resulting stand-alone particle. On this view, particle masses measured in isolation look unrelated to one another only because they are being weighed outside the structure that generated them.

The chart makes the counting concrete. Loop numbers ascend in powers of three, and the proton is obtained at the fourth field order by subtracting the lower hierarchy terms from 2187: 2187 − 243 − 81 − 27 = 1836 — the proton-to-electron mass ratio, whose measured value is 1836.15. Comparable subtractions in the chart are offered for the pion, kaon and eta mesons, with the electron and positron placed at 81 loops.

The neutron

"The Neutron: Modeled as a Fieldstructure" (2011) is the most fully worked application. The neutron appears as the seventh iteration of the fractal hierarchy and — reversing the usual ordering — is formed from plenum field energy before the proton and electron, which arise when the neutron "deploys" its energy in the process ordinarily called decay.

From this Briddell draws a consequence he proposes as testable: at or near absolute zero the electron's kinetic energy on deployment would be low enough for the proton to capture it and form hydrogen. He argues this "should be laboratory testable", and infers that the core of the sun is at or near absolute zero.

Multiple Certainties

FST's response to quantum indeterminacy, set out in "Multiple Certainties" (2012), is that the Uncertainty Principle "is a conclusion determined by the method of analysis, i.e., by the mathematics" — an artifact of a reductionist approach rather than a fact about nature. Where physics studies an object in a field, FST studies form as the product of field force, starting from the whole and deriving the particular: the "something comes from everything" approach as against "something comes from nothing". Briddell claims determinism at every structural platform of reality, from smallest to largest. A related analytic method in his writing is one he calls Tometry.

Status and criticism

FST has not been taken up by mainstream physics and has been developed and published almost entirely within the dissident-science community — roughly twenty conference papers from 2005 onward — rather than in peer-reviewed physics journals. Briddell presented the work to the Synergetics Collaborative in 2004 and gave a talk at an American Mathematical Society sectional meeting in 2008 (abstract 1036-70-114).

A limitation should be recorded plainly, because Briddell states it himself. In the neutron paper he writes that the mechanics of how loops are made to interact to produce particles "is proprietary": what is shown are "the beginning states and end-states, but not the transitional states of the chiral energy rings."

This is consequential independently of any view about the physics. A theory whose generative mechanism is withheld cannot be independently reproduced, checked or refuted, and no reader can confirm that the claimed particle masses follow from the stated axioms rather than from adjustment after the fact. The theory's most distinctive claim — that masses are derived from loop counting to within a fraction of a percent — is precisely the claim that the withheld material would be needed to verify. This obstacle to assessment is self-imposed rather than imposed by any hostile reception.
