Martin Kokus (born May 16, 1950) is an American physicist and independent researcher whose work spans gravitation, earth physics and cosmology. He is known for arguing that astronomical redshift quantization and earth expansion are complementary phenomena, and for studies of solar, lunar and planetary periodicities in earthquakes and volcanism. Kokus has been a longtime participant in the Natural Philosophy Alliance and in the New Concepts in Global Tectonics research community.

Biography

Kokus was trained in gravitation and earth physics. Beginning in 1986, at the age of 36, he undertook a serious study of periodicities in earthquakes and increasingly questioned mainstream scientific consensus. Over the following fourteen years he came to reject a number of established theories and to view academic science with skepticism, following the observational data wherever it appeared to him to lead.

By 1996 he believed he had assembled the basis of a grand unified theory. He obtained an invitation to a conference of astronomers and physicists at the University of Arizona, where he presented his ideas. He later recounted that his approach combined theories unfamiliar to that audience in order to explain phenomena they regarded as established, an experience that reinforced his sense of standing outside conventional academic physics.

Scientific contributions

Kokus's research centers on the proposition that several unconventional observations in astronomy and geophysics can be unified within a single framework. He has argued that quantized redshifts of galaxies and quasars and the hypothesis of an expanding Earth are mutually compatible, and he has related these ideas to the fine-structure constant and to cosmic structure.

In earth physics, Kokus has studied correlations between geophysical activity and astronomical periods, examining possible links between solar, lunar and planetary cycles and the timing of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. This work includes analyses of earthquakes on the Parkfield segment of the San Andreas Fault in relation to lunar phase, and reviews of the broader literature on lunar and solar periods in seismicity and volcanism. Much of his research has been presented within alternative-science venues such as the Natural Philosophy Alliance and the New Concepts in Global Tectonics group rather than through mainstream peer-reviewed geophysics journals.
