The Proceedings of the 1988 International Tesla Symposium is the published record of the second International Tesla Symposium, held in Colorado Springs — the city where Nikola Tesla carried out his high-voltage experiments of 1899–1900 — and organised by the International Tesla Society. It was edited by Steven R Elswick, later the founder of ExtraOrdinary Technology magazine and its conference.

The volume is of interest here as a snapshot of the Tesla-centred current of dissident science at the end of the 1980s. Its four themes — the life and work of Tesla, Tesla-coil engineering, "advances in gravitics", and "advances in electromagnetics" — gathered together, in one place and often on one programme, careful electrical engineering and some of the most contested claims in the field: over-unity and radiant-energy devices, faster-than-light magnetic force, space-generated electric charge, and antigravity. Several of the researchers catalogued on this wiki appear in it, and a number of the papers are the primary statements of their positions.

The symposium

The International Tesla Society ran its symposia in Colorado Springs from 1984, and the 1988 meeting was among the largest. The programme mixed genuine engineering — the Corum brothers' treatment of the Tesla coil as a radio-frequency resonator, computer modelling of Tesla's machines — with the free-energy and new-physics claims that give the Tesla community its heterodox reputation. That juxtaposition is characteristic and is part of what the volume documents: the two were not kept in separate rooms.

Several of these papers are the primary published statements of positions developed at length elsewhere on this wiki.

Bruce E DePalma's "Studies on Rotation Leading to the 'N' Machine" is a founding document of the N-machine (or Faraday-disc homopolar generator) free-energy claim, which recurs throughout the later new-energy literature. Paramahamsa Tewari's paper on charge generation by "space rotation" is an early statement of his Space Vortex Theory, on which he built his own generator claims. Moray B King's "Demonstrating a Zero-Point Coherence" is characteristic of his long argument that the zero-point energy of the vacuum can be tapped. Tom Bearden's "Maxwell's Lost Unified Field Theory" states the thesis — that Heaviside's reduction of Maxwell's original quaternion equations discarded usable physics — that underlies much of his work.

The engineering end is represented above all by the Corum brothers, whose "Tesla Coils — An RF Power Processing Tutorial for Engineers" treats the Tesla coil as a conventional distributed resonator and is cited well outside the dissident community. Guy Obolensky's "The Magnetic Force is Faster Than Light" sits at the other pole, and the tension between the two is the volume in miniature.

A caution for readers: John E Moray, who spoke on "Radiant Energy in the Eighties", should not be confused with Thomas Henry Moray (T. Henry Moray), the earlier inventor of the "radiant energy device", whose work is catalogued separately here.
