Grimes wrote ''The Electromagnetic Origin of Quantum Theory and Light'' (World Scientific; first edition 2002, second edition 2004). The book applies classical electromagnetic field theory to atomic-scale phenomena and argues that quantum behaviour — including photon emission and annihilation and electron nonlocality — can be recovered from classical field theory rather than requiring quantum theory as a separate fundamental description. This thesis, that classical electrodynamics "fully describes atomic scale events," runs counter to the standard view that quantum mechanics is fundamental, and it is on this basis that the authors appear in the dissident list.
