Marvin Eli Kirsh (born March 21, 1950) is an American biochemist, anthropologist and independent philosopher of science. Trained originally in the natural sciences and biochemistry, he later turned to anthropology and the philosophy of science, and is affiliated with the Department of Anthropology at California State University, Los Angeles. His writings draw connections between physics, biology, anthropology and metaphysics, exploring themes such as uniqueness, emergence, parallelism and the nature of space, motion and relativity.
Biography
Kirsh earned a Bachelor of Arts in natural science from Johns Hopkins University in 1972 and a Ph.D. in biochemistry from the City University of New York in 1986. He subsequently pursued graduate study in philosophy and anthropology, entering the Department of Anthropology at California State University, Los Angeles in 2006. He resides in Palmdale, California.
Work
Kirsh's writing spans peer-reviewed papers, essays, poetry and books that bring together his background in biochemistry with philosophy of science and anthropology. His stated research interests include the philosophy of mind, the philosophy of the physical sciences, the cognitive sciences and the social and natural sciences. Recurring subjects in his work include the concept of uniqueness and "self-belonging" in nature, the notion of "parallelism" between the individual and the universal, emergence, and reinterpretations of ideas drawn from Einstein and Euclid concerning space, surface, mass and motion. Much of this material is collected in his book Uniqueness, Self-belonging and Intercourse in Nature (Lambert Academic Publishing, 2010) and in numerous abstracts and papers archived by the Natural Philosophy Alliance, PhilPapers and the Social Science Research Network.
