The Rodin coil is a toroidal winding pattern devised by Marko Rodin, in which the conductor is wound around a torus in a repeating star-like sequence rather than in the usual evenly spaced circular loops. It is one of the most widely replicated devices in the amateur new energy community, and a substantial body of experimental reports on it is catalogued on this wiki.

The winding

A conventional toroidal coil is wound so that successive turns lie side by side around the ring. In the Rodin pattern the winding instead skips a fixed number of positions on each pass, so that the conductor traces a closed star polygon over the surface of the torus and returns to its starting point only after several circuits. The result is that the current paths cross one another at intervals and the turns are not parallel, which is the feature its advocates regard as essential.

Rodin derived the sequence from what he calls vortex-based mathematics, a scheme built on the repeating digit-sum patterns that appear when the numbers 1–9 are doubled repeatedly (1, 2, 4, 8, 7, 5 and back to 1, with 3, 6 and 9 standing apart). He describes the winding as following "the longest free-flowing path of the electron", and identifies the 3–6–9 triad as governing a flux perpendicular to the coil surface.

Claims

Rodin and those following him have attributed a wide range of properties to the coil, including:

  • an unusually strong and well-collimated magnetic field along the torus axis, described as a toroidal pinch;
  • applications to fusion confinement, brushless motors, high-sensitivity antennas and propulsion;
  • in the stronger versions of the claim, gravitational effects and energy gain.

The most-cited experimental report on this wiki is Bill Ramsay's "Rodin Coil Design" (1995), which is notably careful about what it does and does not show: Ramsay wound several coils from Rodin's book Aerodynamicsss – The Dandelion Puff Principle, ran simple tests, and states plainly that none of his coils matched the proportions Rodin considers necessary and that his results, while showing "some interesting attributes and a few surprises", were non-definitive. "Rodin Coil Test Result Explanations" and "The Rodin Number Map and Rodin Coil" continue the discussion, and Randy Powell, Jamie Buturff, Russ Gries, Chuck Middaugh, Robert Hutchings and Peter Van Bakel are among the other contributors here who have worked on the design.

Assessment

Two quite different claims are bundled together under this heading, and they deserve separate treatment.

The winding geometry is a real physical object and does have genuine properties. Toroidal windings in general confine their magnetic flux within the core and produce very little external field, which is why they are used in transformers and inductors where stray coupling matters; a non-parallel, crossing winding will differ measurably from a conventional toroid in inductance, self-capacitance and resonant behaviour. Those differences are ordinary electromagnetism and are worth measuring. Ramsay's approach — wind it, test it, report what happened without overstating — is the right way to go about it.

The mathematical foundation is much weaker. The doubling sequence 1-2-4-8-7-5 and the special role of 3, 6 and 9 are arithmetic facts about digit sums in base ten — they follow from 10 ≡ 1 (mod 9), and they change entirely in any other base. Since nothing about an electron or a magnetic field is aware of the human convention of counting in tens, a winding pattern justified by base-ten digit sums has no evident physical warrant. This is a criticism from within the same tradition as much as from outside it: it does not show the coil is uninteresting, only that the reason offered for the particular winding is not a physical reason.

The energy and gravity claims remain unsupported. No measurement in the material catalogued here establishes power output exceeding input, and reports of gravitational effects are qualitative. The general difficulty documented across this wiki's new energy material applies with full force: apparent excess power in pulsed and reactive circuits is very often a measurement artefact, since a multimeter's volts × amps product is not real power when current and voltage are out of phase — Patrick G Bailey's papers on this wiki make the point directly against claims made within the same community.
