Anup Rej is a theoretical physicist, author and artist known for proposing a multifractal, beginningless model of the universe as an alternative to Big Bang cosmology. He is listed in The Worldwide List of Dissident Scientists.
Background
Rej was born in Kolkata (Calcutta), India, and received a Ph.D. in theoretical nuclear physics from the University of Calcutta. He moved to Oslo, Norway, in 1971 and worked at the University of Oslo and at Trondheim in theoretical nuclear physics and elementary particle physics before later turning to cosmology and astrophysics. He is based in Oslo and has also written books on philosophy, spirituality and social thought.
Ideas
Rej presents the universe as a multifractal made of filaments, loops and knots, with cosmic structures arranged in a self-similar, hierarchically entangled pattern that he attributes to a "universal cosmic design." In his view the universe is eternal, without beginning or end ("timelessness in time"), and turbulence together with magnetic fields — rather than gravitation alone — are the principal agents shaping cosmic structure. This framework, presented in his books and on his websites, is offered in explicit opposition to standard Big Bang cosmology and lies outside the accepted mainstream of physics.
