Ideas
In his essay "Darwinian model of evolution", Balciunas proposes that what Darwin described as natural selection driven by the struggle for existence is in fact a manifestation of the zeroth law of thermodynamics. He contends that when applied to competing self-replicating entities, this thermodynamic principle makes biological evolution a spontaneous physical process tending toward equilibrium structures of highly organized living matter. On this view, natural selection is not confined to living things but also operates in the nonliving world. These proposals lie outside mainstream evolutionary biology.
