Dmitry Yu Tsipenyuk is a Russian physicist associated with the Prokhorov General Physics Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences. He is listed in The Worldwide List of Dissident Scientists for his proposed generalization of special relativity known as the Extended Space Model.
Work
Together with collaborators (notably V. A. Andreev), Tsipenyuk proposes an Extended Space Model (ESM) that enlarges the (1+3)-dimensional Minkowski spacetime of special relativity to a (1+4)-dimensional space, adding the interval S as a fifth coordinate. In this framework he argues that scalar gravity and electromagnetism can be unified into a single field, that particle rest masses need not be constant, and that a photon can carry a nonzero variable mass. The model predicts that electromagnetic fields could, under certain conditions, be partially transformed into gravitational effects.
Tsipenyuk and colleagues have reported experiments intended to test this prediction, directing a beam of relativistic electrons (about 30 MeV) onto a tungsten target and measuring small deviations of a nearby rotating pendulum, with claimed forces at the microscopic upper bound of about 10Template:Sup N. This unification programme and its experimental interpretation lie outside the accepted framework of general relativity and the Standard Model.
