Gavin Greenoak is an Australian-based photobiologist and cancer researcher, and the founder, managing director and scientific director of the Australian Photobiology Testing Facility (APTF) at the University of Sydney in Sydney, New South Wales. His research concerns the interaction of light with living tissue, particularly the effects of ultraviolet radiation on human skin, and he has an associated interest in the relationship between science and poetry.
Biography
Greenoak began his career in cancer research, work that he has said gave him an insight into skin biology and the effects of sun exposure. His early research was carried out with the Imperial Cancer Research Fund and, in university settings, with the Department of Veterinary Pathology and the Department of Animal Science. He subsequently established the Australian Photobiology Testing Facility at the University of Sydney, which he has directed as managing and scientific director. He is based in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.
Work
Greenoak's research focuses on photobiology, sun-protection testing and skin-cancer prevention, with particular attention to how ultraviolet exposure affects human skin and how protective measures such as sunscreens can be evaluated. Through the Australian Photobiology Testing Facility he has been involved for many years in the study of skin, skin cancer and sunscreen efficacy, including the commercial testing of sunscreens. He has also served as a director of the Melanoma and Skin Cancer Research Institute (MASCRI). Alongside his scientific work, he has taken an interest in the connections between science and poetry.
