De Hilster calls the growing-Earth animations by the comic artist Neal Adams, which he came across in 2008, one of the three great scientific surprises of his life. Watching the continents close on a smaller globe with almost no adjustment made him an immediate supporter of what James Maxlow calls expansion tectonics: removing sea floor from newest to oldest brings the land masses together too well, he argues, to be coincidence — a point Stephen W Hurrell has since put a probability figure on.
