Liona Fan-Chiang is a physicist and science writer associated with the 21st Century Science and LaRouche science circles. She is known for her work in experimental laser–plasma physics as well as her writing and commentary on space science, biophysics, and long-range science policy.

Biography

Fan-Chiang studied physics at the University of California, Berkeley, where she completed doctoral research in laser–plasma acceleration and received a Ph.D. for a dissertation on two-color ionization injection. Her experimental work was carried out in association with the Accelerator Technology and Applied Physics (ATAP) Division of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.

Alongside her scientific research, Fan-Chiang has been an associate editor and contributor for 21st Century Science and Technology, based in Washington, D.C., and has been active as a member of the science team associated with the LaRouche movement.

Work

Fan-Chiang's experimental research concerns laser wakefield and laser–plasma acceleration, a technique in which intense laser pulses drive plasma waves that accelerate electrons over very short distances. She contributed to work on petawatt laser guiding and electron-beam acceleration in laser-heated capillary discharge waveguides, and to studies of supersonic gas-jet and nozzle targets used in laser–plasma accelerators. Her doctoral dissertation addressed two-color ionization injection as a method for controlling injected electron beams.

As a writer and commentator, Fan-Chiang has addressed topics including space science, cosmic radiation, the management of Earth's water cycle, and the relationship between biological and electromagnetic processes ("EM biology"). Her commentary within the LaRouche science team has emphasized themes of anti-entropy and a Solar System–wide conception of human activity, drawing on the astronomical work of Johannes Kepler.
