Matti Juhani Pitkänen (born 30 October 1950, in Kiuruvesi, Finland) is a Finnish theoretical physicist. He is best known as the originator and lifelong developer of Topological Geometrodynamics (TGD), a personal research program that he describes as an attempt to construct a unified theory of the fundamental interactions. He has worked for most of his career as an independent researcher and lives in Hanko, a small seaside town in southern Finland.

Biography

Pitkänen began studying physics, theoretical physics, and mathematics at the University of Helsinki in 1970. He completed the degree of Candidate of Philosophy in theoretical physics in 1977 and the degree of Licentiate of Philosophy in theoretical physics in 1982. He received his Ph.D. in theoretical physics from the University of Helsinki in 1982 with a thesis titled Topological Geometrodynamics.

During and after his studies he held a series of academic and research positions, including assistant posts in the Department of Theoretical Physics (1976–1979), a research assistantship at the Helsinki University of Technology (1980–1981), a research post at the Neste Oy research center (1984–1985), a teaching position in the Department of Theoretical Physics (1987–1992), and a research position in the Division of High Energy Physics at the University of Helsinki (1996–1997). Since completing his thesis he has continued to develop TGD largely as a self-described "free researcher" outside a permanent university appointment.

Pitkänen has four children. He has said that his research program has been the central passion of his life for several decades.

Scientific contributions

Pitkänen's principal work is Topological Geometrodynamics (TGD), a theoretical framework he first outlined in his 1982 doctoral thesis and has continued to elaborate ever since. TGD proposes a unification of the fundamental interactions by generalizing string models and Einstein's geometric approach to physics. In its basic formulation, space-time is modeled as a collection of four-dimensional surfaces embedded in an eight-dimensional space formed by the product of Minkowski space (M⁴) and the complex projective space CP₂.

From the 1990s onward Pitkänen extended the program in several directions, including p-adic physics, a "hierarchy of Planck constants" hypothesis introduced around 2005, and applications to a proposed theory of consciousness and to quantum biology. These extensions connect TGD to his interest in topics such as many-sheeted space-time, magnetic fields, and unconventional or "new energy" phenomena.

TGD is Pitkänen's own research program and lies outside mainstream theoretical physics; it has not been adopted by the broader physics community. He has published his work primarily through self-produced online books and monographs rather than in the standard peer-reviewed literature.
