Roger Taylor (1929 – 2023) was a British immunologist and independent researcher. After a career in fundamental immunology, in which he contributed to the identification of the B‑cell surface receptor as immunoglobulin, he took early retirement in 1987 to devote himself to the investigation of "life energy" — variously termed chi, orgone and subtle energy — using a quantitative dowsing method.

Biography

Taylor was born in 1929 at Albury, near Guildford in Surrey, England, where the family home was the site of his earliest amateur experiments. He trained as a scientist and pursued a research career in fundamental immunology, working for a period at the National Institute for Medical Research at Mill Hill, London, and later at the University of Bristol.

With his three children grown, Taylor returned to the family home near Albury, from which he continued his independent research. He died in 2023.

Scientific contributions

Immunology

During the early 1970s Taylor, working alongside Professor Martin Raff, contributed to a series of studies demonstrating that the surface receptor of the B lymphocyte is immunoglobulin. Using fluorescent‑antibody labelling, the collaborators observed that the bound antibody redistributed and "capped" at one pole of the cell surface. A joint paper published in Nature New Biology in 1971 showed that this "capping" was an active process requiring the multivalent binding of surface immunoglobulin, followed by internalisation of the capped components. This body of work was published in Nature and related journals and formed part of the foundation for the modern understanding of B‑ and T‑cell surface markers.

Subtle energy research

After taking early retirement in 1987, Taylor turned to the study of "life energy". He developed a quantitative dowsing method which, being numerical, he argued could move part way toward objective detection of subtle energy. Using this method — supported by ultraviolet spectroscopy of treated water and statistical seedling‑growth experiments — he investigated the "orgone" energy proposed by Wilhelm Reich, the properties of orgonite (metal particles set in resin), the orgone accumulator, and "ormus" materials.

Among his reported findings were that energy from an orgonite or pyramid source could be dowsed at a distance and produced measurable enhancement of seedling growth, and that the ultraviolet absorbance of water was altered after exposure to orgonite. He collaborated with James Lyons on theoretical frameworks connecting these observations to ideas of quantum coherence. His studies appeared as a series, "Studies on 'Life‑Energy' by means of a Quantitative Dowsing Method", in the journal Syntropy, and he presented related work, including a "Preliminary Study of the Life Energy associated with Orgonite and Ormus", at the United States Psychotronics Association conference in 2008.
