Shiuji Inomata (1932 – 17 April 2001), also romanised Shuji Inomata, was a Japanese physicist and engineer, president of the Japan Psychotronics Institute, and a leading figure in the Japanese "new-paradigm science" and free-energy movements. He is known for his work on the N-machine — a homopolar "free-energy" generator — and for a speculative theory that sought to write consciousness into the equations of physics as a third term alongside energy and matter. He is listed in Jean de Climont's Worldwide List of Dissident Scientists.

Biography

Inomata graduated in physics and engineering from the University of Electro-Communications in Tokyo and took a Ph.D. from the Tokyo Institute of Technology. He worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and spent much of his career as a government scientist in Japan's Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI), at its Electrotechnical Laboratory.

From that position he became an organiser as much as a researcher. He founded and led the Japan Psychotronics Institute, through which in the 1990s he hosted several international symposia on "new-paradigm science," including one at Waseda University in Tokyo, and he launched a committee within MITI to investigate "new energy," which he associated with the traditional concept of ki. He died on 17 April 2001 in a hospital near his home in Niigata, of organ failure associated with liver cancer, at the age of sixty-eight.

The physicist Beverly Rubik, writing in Infinite Energy, remembered him as "a courageous leader and pioneer of new-paradigm science, in his work in theory and experiment… Even though he did not live more than a short time in this millennium, he was a new-millennium scientist."

The N-machine

Inomata was one of the principal developers of the N-machine, a variant of the homopolar or Faraday-disc generator. The device originated with the American inventor Bruce DePalma (who named it "N" for Nature), and was taken up in India by Paramahamsa Tewari, whose "Space Power Generator" is a sister design. In a homopolar generator a conducting disc rotates with a coaxial magnet; the claim made for the N-machine — and disputed by mainstream physics — is that certain configurations draw excess electrical power from the vacuum or from space itself, so that the output can exceed the mechanical input.

Through the Japan Psychotronics Institute, Inomata built and tested his own versions, including the superconducting-magnet JPI-II machine described in his 1994 design papers, and reported success with the device in "The "N" Machine Success, in Japan" (1993).

Consciousness, energy and matter

Inomata's theoretical work aimed to unite physics with consciousness. Extending the equations of physics, he introduced a term representing consciousness — a parameter he labelled Q — and proposed a triangular relationship among matter, energy and consciousness, in which physical energy is understood to "manifest" from the quantum vacuum under the influence of the consciousness term. This "consciousness–energy–matter" framework, set out in his 1987 book Paradigm of New Science: Principia for the 21st Century and in "Science of Consciousness and New Scientific World-View" (1995), is the theoretical counterpart to the N-machine: the vacuum is treated as an active reservoir that both powers the device and links mind to the physical world.

Assessment

Inomata is best understood as a serious and well-placed figure of the new-energy movement rather than as a crank, and his page should reflect both that standing and the reasons his central claims are not accepted.

His credentials and influence were real. A MITI laboratory scientist with a doctorate and MIT experience, he brought institutional weight to the Japanese free-energy scene, convened genuine international symposia, and even persuaded a government ministry to open an inquiry into "new energy." Whatever one concludes about the physics, he pursued it openly, built apparatus, and published his designs — which is more than much of this literature offers.

The N-machine, however, is a well-understood device asked to do something it does not do. A homopolar generator is entirely real and produces direct current, but its energy balance is not mysterious: careful independent measurements of DePalma's and related machines have consistently found that output does not exceed input once all the mechanical torque, drag and electrical losses are accounted for, and the reported "over-unity" results trace to incomplete measurement — unmeasured back-reaction torque on the drive, or power drawn from the rotor's kinetic energy — rather than to energy extracted from the vacuum. No N-machine has been independently confirmed to produce net excess power, and the burden of an extraordinary claim has not been met.

The consciousness–energy–matter theory belongs to a different category again. Adding a "consciousness" term Q to the equations of physics is a philosophical proposal, not a tested physical one: the parameter is not defined operationally, makes no quantitative prediction that can be checked against experiment, and does not connect to any measurement that would distinguish it from ordinary physics without it. It expresses a worldview — that mind and the physical vacuum are aspects of one reality — rather than a result.

The fair verdict is that Inomata was a sincere and organisationally serious pioneer of a research programme whose two pillars do not hold up: the N-machine as a source of free energy is contradicted by careful measurement, and the consciousness term is untestable metaphysics in mathematical dress. His significance is historical and cultural — as the figure who, more than any other, gave Japan's new-paradigm and free-energy movement its institutional shape.
