Sydney Ernest Grimm is a Dutch independent researcher based in Amersfoort, in the province of Utrecht, Netherlands, who works on the foundations of physics. He is known for a series of self-published essays and preprints developing a model of "quantized space", in which the geometrical structure of space is proposed as the underlying origin of quantum fields and observable physical reality.

Biography

Grimm describes himself as an independent researcher who has pursued theoretical work in philosophy, mathematics and physics. Working outside of an academic institution, he has published his research as preprints and essays through platforms such as PhilArchive, PhilPeople and ResearchGate, and has taken part in essay competitions organised by the Foundational Questions Institute (FQXi).

Work

Grimm's work centres on the relationship between the two dominant frameworks of modern physics: Albert Einstein's theory of relativity, which describes the universe in terms of "spacetime", and quantum field theory, which describes the universe as a composition of a limited number of basic quantum fields. Grimm argues that these two descriptions exclude one another and seeks a common underlying origin for both.

In his essays he proposes that space itself is quantized, and that this quantized space is not directly comparable with everyday phenomenological concepts. He introduces "tessellation" and "concentration" as geometrical mechanisms that, in his account, are responsible for the creation of observable reality. From this framework he attempts to derive the mathematical origin of the structure of the basic quantum fields, and relates it to the conservation of energy, Planck's constant, the constant speed of light, and the non-locality of the universe.

His writings are self-published preprints and essays rather than peer-reviewed journal articles, and represent an independent, dissident approach to the foundations of physics.
