Quantum Mechanics from General Relativity is a 1986 monograph by the theoretical physicist Mendel Sachs, published by D. Reidel (Springer). Its full subtitle is An Approximation for a Theory of Inertia.

Overview

Sachs argues that quantum mechanics is not fundamental but arises as a low-energy, linear approximation to a more basic, fully relativistic field theory rooted in general relativity. Building on his program of a unified field theory expressed in terms of quaternion/spinor factorizations of Einstein's equations, he derives quantum-mechanical results (including the formal apparatus usually taken as axiomatic) as limiting cases, and presents this as a resolution of the long-standing conflict between quantum theory and relativity in favour of the latter.

About the author

Mendel Sachs (1927–2012) was an American theoretical physicist and professor at the University at Buffalo, known for his field-theoretic unification program based on general relativity and for his writings on the conceptual foundations of physics. See also his Dialogues on Modern Physics.
