Undergraduate in Physics (1976) and master in Astrophysics (1982) at Physics Department of the Federal University of Minas Gerais, Brazil, and graduate in Astrophysics (1989) at Kapteyn Astronomical Institute, University of Groningen, The Netherlands. His main interests are in Extragalactic Astronomy focusing on the following subjects: binary galaxies and small groups, interactive galaxies, and historical and conceptual aspects of modern cosmology. During 1997-1998 he spent a year, as a Visiting Scholar, working on binary galaxies at the Astronomy Department of Cornell University, Ithaca, NY. He is retired (April/2011) from the Federal University of Minas Gerais, where he had been at the Physics Department since March/1977.
