Abstract
Closed current loops were photographed during high voltage discharges. The loops enclose a magnetic field of very high energy density. They contract and quickly become compact force-free loops that superficially resemble spheres. In these toroidal geometries, the trapped internal magnetic field balances the external magnetic field to provide an almost force-free configuration. The bibliography cites numerous refernces on ball lightning. - Moray King
