Field Theory for Engineers is a 1961 textbook by Parry H Moon and Domina Eberle Spencer, published by D. Van Nostrand Company. It is a comprehensive treatment of classical field theory — scalar, vector, and tensor fields, coordinate systems, and boundary-value problems — written for engineers and applied scientists.

Overview

The book systematically develops the mathematics of physical fields and their application to electromagnetism and related engineering problems. It is a companion to the authors' more mathematical Field Theory Handbook. Moon and Spencer were noted for advocating a re-examination of the conceptual foundations of electromagnetism, including a defence of a modified, neo-classical ("Gaussian"/Ampère) electrodynamics.

About the authors

Parry Hiram Moon (1898–1988) was an American electrical engineer at MIT who, together with the mathematician Domina Eberle Spencer, co-authored eight scientific books and more than 200 papers on subjects ranging from electromagnetic field theory to colorimetry, aesthetics, and applied mathematics.
