Overview
The report presents Saxl and Allen's measurements with a massive torsion pendulum, which recorded anomalous changes in the pendulum's period — most notably during the total solar eclipse of 7 March 1970 — together with an unexplained diurnal variation. On the basis of these results the original authors suggested that "gravitational theory needs to be modified." The observations are related to the so-called Allais effect (anomalous pendulum behaviour during eclipses reported by Maurice Allais). The claim that these results require modifying general relativity has not been accepted by the physics community, and later attempts to reproduce the effect have generally been unsuccessful.
