Johann Marinsek (correctly spelled Marinšek, pronounced "Marinshek") is an Austrian physicist, engineer and independent author whose work addresses the ontological and conceptual foundations of physics, including the nature of matter, inertia, radiation and atomic structure. A retired assistant professor of mechanics at Graz University of Technology, he is a critic of the theory of relativity, of quantum physics and of the Rutherford–Bohr atomic model, and has proposed an alternative model of matter based on elementary permanent ring magnets.
Biography
Marinsek studied civil engineering at the Technical University in Graz, Austria (Graz University of Technology). He served for twenty years as an assistant professor at the university's Institute for Mechanics. During this period he also studied philosophy and the history of science. He subsequently worked as an independent private scholar. He resides in Deutschlandsberg, Austria.
Scientific contributions
Marinsek's research concerns the ontological foundations of physics, that is, the nature of its basic concepts such as movement, space, force, charge and quantity of matter, as well as the derived concepts of time and energy and the nature of inert mass. He argues that a number of accepted results in modern physics rest on what he regards as category mistakes, and he examines the axiomatic basis of mechanics, relativity theory and quantum physics.
He questions the empirical basis of the Rutherford–Bohr atomic model, contending that there is no valid empirical evidence for an atomic shell structure with spinning nucleons and electrons. In his view the Planck formula for the quantized energy of radiation is not a natural law, and he raises objections to the concept of the photon, which he characterises as a wave without amplitude and a corpuscle without charge but with spin. He also holds that so-called inertial forces cannot be explained for corpuscles moving in a vacuum, and proposes instead that inertial forces arise as a resistance within an all-pervading electromagnetic medium.
As an alternative, Marinsek proposes an atomic model in which elementary permanent ring magnets are the fundamental building blocks of hydrogen, and hydrogen in turn the building block of all elements, so that magnetic coupling is the only atomic force. In this account atoms behave as oscillators, spectral lines represent resonant frequencies rather than quantum jumps, and chemical bonding results from magnetic coupling rather than from valence electrons. He further argues that in uranium fission the energy balance for binding energies is violated when the formula E = mc² is applied, holding that in this formula the concepts of energy and inert mass are conceptually incompatible and that the relation is therefore a limited empirical rule rather than a natural law. He similarly maintains that electric current is not a flux of charges but the propagation of an oscillating state of charges.
His unfinished and working papers were formerly published on his personal website, marinsek.com.
