Thierry De Mees (born 8 September 1955) is a Belgian engineer and independent researcher known for his work on gravitomagnetism and the development of what he calls the Coriolis Gravity Theory. Working outside the mainstream physics community, he has proposed an alternative model of gravity based on an analogy between gravitation and electromagnetism, which he applies to a wide range of astronomical and cosmological questions.

Biography

De Mees was born on 8 September 1955 and holds an engineering diploma (Dipl. Ing.). He resides in Edegem, Belgium. According to his own account, his interest in gravitation dates to 2002, when press reports on dark matter as an explanation for the flat rotation curves of galaxies prompted him to revisit an analogy between electromagnetism and gravitation that he had first sketched during his university studies. From that point he began developing and publishing a series of papers and books on the subject. He has contributed numerous articles to the General Science Journal and to the Natural Philosophy Alliance, and has continued to publish on gravitational and cosmological topics.

Scientific contributions

De Mees's central work is a gravitational model he variously calls gravitomagnetism, gyro-gravitation, or the Coriolis Gravity Theory. It is built on the Maxwell analogy for gravitation (the Heaviside field), in which gravitation is described by two fields analogous to the electric and magnetic fields of electromagnetism. In addition to Newtonian gravity, De Mees introduces a second, magnetic-like component that he terms "gyrotation", which he holds to be generated by the motion and rotation of masses. In later work he interprets both gravitation and inertia as Coriolis effects exerted by gravitons upon particles.

De Mees argues that this framework can account for a broad range of astronomical phenomena without invoking dark matter or the general theory of relativity, including the flatness of the solar system and of disc and spiral galaxies, the shapes of supernova remnants, the dynamics of Saturn's rings, the flyby anomaly, and Mercury's perihelion advance. He has also proposed a "Solar Protuberance" hypothesis, according to which the planets originated from an explosive ejection of solar material rather than from a protoplanetary nebula, and has advanced a version of the Expanding Earth hypothesis linked to his gravitational model.

These proposals fall outside mainstream physics and cosmology, which retain general relativity and the standard dark matter paradigm, and De Mees's work has been published chiefly through independent and alternative-science venues rather than in peer-reviewed mainstream journals.
