Greg Volk (born January 7, 1961) is an American electrical engineer, entrepreneur, and independent researcher in fundamental physics. Working outside the scientific mainstream, he is known for his study of Maxwell's equations, the questioning of foundational assumptions in modern physics, and the exploration of geometric and topological ("toroidal ring") models of atomic structure. He has been strongly influenced by Common Sense Science and Creation Science, and has served as an organizer and officer of the Natural Philosophy Alliance (NPA) and its successor, the John Chappell Natural Philosophy Society (CNPS).

Biography

Volk attended Stanford University from 1979 to 1984, studying electrical engineering while also completing the core undergraduate physics curriculum. He began, but did not complete, a master's degree in signal processing, and worked in optical character recognition (OCR) and CAD conversion.

Rather than pursue a career in physics or engineering, Volk became an entrepreneur, working over the years as a stock broker and investor, real estate broker, mortgage broker, landlord, music arranger and composer, business owner, and in the oil industry. He has described his introduction to Creation Science in the late 1980s as transforming his worldview toward a conviction in the existence of absolutes.

Volk lives in Eagan, Minnesota. He is married and has three children and one grandchild.

Scientific contributions

Volk has stated that his decision not to pursue physics professionally stemmed in part from unease with the foundational laws of physics, and a conviction that fundamental theory should exhibit greater elegance and unity rather than ad hoc complexity. He was particularly troubled by the implications of the Heisenberg uncertainty principle.

In the summer of 2007, Russ McGlenn introduced Volk to the work of David Bergman and Dr. Charles William Lucas of Common Sense Science, which renewed his interest in physics. He subsequently studied Bergman's ring model of the atom and the classical foundations of electrodynamics, drawing on the work of researchers such as Prof. Andre Assis, Dr. Petr Beckmann, Dr. Peter Granea, Dr. Thomas E Phipps Jr., Dr. Paul Wesley, Dr. Parry H. Moon, and Dr. Domina Eberle Spencer, as well as the original writings of Newton, Huygens, Faraday, Boltzmann, Mach, Planck, and Albert Einstein.

Volk supports the Common Sense Science approach as a path toward resolving fundamental problems in physics, and has worked on connecting the concept of entropy with electrodynamics. As an independent researcher, he has argued that the growing body of anomalies in new energy, low-energy nuclear reactions, astrophysics, atomic physics, and entanglement points to a need for major new paradigms in physics rather than incremental fixes. His presentations and papers address topics including the meaning of Maxwell's equations, reference-frame-independent dynamics, questionable assumptions in modern physics, and the topology of toroidal and vortex structures.

Organizational roles

Volk became active in the Natural Philosophy Alliance in 2008, where he met David de Hilster. Together they modernized the organization's digital infrastructure, and Volk contributed the majority of the entries in the Natural Philosophers Database. In 2013 he became president of the NPA, and following the organization's reformation as the John Chappell Natural Philosophy Society he served as vice-president of the CNPS.
