Category:Propulsion
This category collects work on unconventional propulsion — proposals and devices intended to produce thrust without expelling propellant, or by means outside conventional rocketry and aerodynamics.
It covers inertial and reactionless drives, magnetic and electromagnetic propulsion, magnetic motors, gyroscopic and mechanical devices claimed to produce net force, and field-propulsion concepts drawing on gravity control.
The central objection to all of it is conservation of momentum: a closed system cannot accelerate its centre of mass without expelling something. Researchers here divide between those who accept the principle and argue that their device interacts with an external medium — an aether, the vacuum field, or the distant matter of the universe by way of Category:Mach's Principle — and those who hold that the conservation law is itself an approximation.
