Abstract

A physical mechanism is proposed to substantiate the Bohr-Wilson-Sommerfeld (BWS) model of the hydrogen atom. This mechanism is based on the well-established properties of the electron and proton, the energy and the angular momentum ?h of the photon, and the fundamental conservation laws of classical physics. It is proposed that photons cause the observed quantization in atoms.
