Francis Viren Fernandes (born 3 December 1961) is an Indian biochemist, pharmacist and independent theoretical physicist based in India. Trained as a chemist and biochemist, he is known within the alternative-physics community for an ether-based model of physics he calls the "186-ether" (also styled the "Fernandes-186 ether"), through which he proposes to unify gravity with electromagnetic phenomena and to derive the fine-structure constant. His ideas are outside the scientific mainstream.

Biography

Fernandes graduated in 1985 from Ohio University in Athens, Ohio, United States, with a Master of Science in Chemistry, majoring in biochemistry. His graduate research concerned inhibition studies of the procarcinogen benzo[a]pyrene, examining the inhibition of its binding to DNA and the production of carcinogenic metabolites, especially the diol epoxide.

Returning to India, he worked for two years in research and development for a multinational pharmaceutical company, where he was involved in the fermentation scale-up of a broth showing antibiotic activity and in the isolation of its active ingredient using chromatography and spectroscopy. In 1989 he completed a diploma in pharmacy and became a registered pharmacist, later establishing a hospital pharmacy. In 1994 he launched his own line of pharmaceutical products, including aqueous cream and emulsifying ointment used as dilution bases for steroid creams in the treatment of psoriasis.

From 2000 Fernandes turned to teaching and to independent research on atomic structure and the physics of the hydrogen atom. He has taught International Baccalaureate students and led science field trips to the Andaman and Lakshadweep islands. He has presented his work at conferences of the Natural Philosophy Alliance and, more recently, at the SIPS (Sustainable Industrial Processing Summit) series.

Scientific contributions

Fernandes's central claim is the existence of a fundamental ether mass he calls the "186-ether," which he holds to be responsible for electromagnetism, gravity, heat, temperature, black-body radiation and Brownian motion. He proposes that this mass has a radius corresponding to Boltzmann's constant and represents a lower mass limit in the Universe, complementary to the Planck length and Planck mass as an upper limit.

A recurring theme in his work is the fine-structure constant, approximately 1/137.036, which he refers to as the "Hand of God" number after Richard Feynman's remark on its mysterious value. Fernandes argues that the ratio of the Fernandes-186 ether radius to the Planck length equals 1/137.036, and interprets this as the radial pulsation limit of the ether. He has developed these ideas across numerous self-published abstracts and presentations, including the 2023 SIPS paper "The Hand of God Alpha Represents Radial Pulsation Limits of Fernandes-186 Ether to the Planck Ether Length."

Separately, in biotechnology he has reported experimental work on the radiofrequency ablation of cancerous and microbial cells, and has proposed a theoretical scheme (which he terms "SOYOTO") for inserting a soy-protein gene into the potato using the Ti plasmid as a vector. These claims have not been independently verified in the peer-reviewed literature.
